RAB1A pseudogene 1 (RAB1AP1) is classified as a pseudogene, meaning it is a genomic DNA sequence similar to a known gene (in this case, RAB1A) but is generally nonfunctional and does not encode a protein. Pseudogenes can arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition and can sometimes have roles as regulatory noncoding RNAs, but RAB1AP1 has no well-defined biological or disease-related role documented in current research. Its name indicates similarity to the RAB1A gene, which is a small GTPase involved in vesicular trafficking and implicated in cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, but RAB1AP1 itself is not an established therapeutic target or biomolecule. The term "pseudogene" indicates RAB1AP1 is not a protein-coding gene and does not function as a classical therapeutic target (such as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor). Pseudogenes are sometimes transcribed to RNA and may have indirect regulatory roles (e.g., via endogenous siRNAs or as miRNA sinks), but no such roles are described for RAB1AP1 in available resources. Information about RAB1A, the functional gene and protein, is abundant and shows it is a true molecular target with significant biological and disease roles, but RAB1AP1 is not interchangeable with RAB1A. There is nothing to suggest that RAB1AP1 is targeted by drugs, involved in known clinical pathways, or used as a biomarker.
