Overview

The Rac GTPase activating protein 1 pseudogene (RACGAP1P) is a non-protein-coding pseudogene homologous to the RACGAP1 gene. While pseudogenes are typically inactive remnants of protein-coding genes, RACGAP1P has been shown to function as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA). By acting as a molecular sponge for microRNAs such as miR-15a-5p, RACGAP1P indirectly regulates the expression of its parent gene, RACGAP1, thereby promoting the activation of oncogenic signaling pathways (Rho/ERK) in human cancers, especially hepatocellular carcinoma. Elevated expression of RACGAP1P in tumors correlates with advanced disease, poor prognosis, and early recurrence, suggesting its utility as a cancer biomarker. However, as a pseudogene, it is not considered a conventional drug target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter[5].
