Rad51 recombinase is a highly conserved protein that plays a central role in the repair of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) through homologous recombination (HR). It is essential for maintaining genomic stability and preventing mutations that can lead to diseases such as cancer. Rad51 catalyzes the search for homology and strand pairing between broken DNA strands and undamaged homologous sequences, enabling accurate repair of DSBs by using an intact template. Its activity is ATP-dependent and regulated by post-translational modifications and accessory proteins.
