Overview

The radial nerve is a major peripheral nerve of the upper limb, originating from the posterior cord of the brachial plexus with nerve roots C5 through T1 (StatPearls, NBK534240). It serves a critical biological role by providing motor innervation to the extensor muscles of the arm and forearm, as well as sensory coverage for the posterior aspect of the upper limb and the radial side of the hand (Wikipedia, "Radial nerve"). Clinically, the radial nerve is not a molecular target like a receptor or enzyme; instead, it is an anatomical structure frequently targeted for regional anesthesia and nerve blocks using drugs like lidocaine to provide localized pain relief (NCBI, PMC6083321). Damage or compression of this nerve can lead to radial nerve palsy, often characterized by 'wrist drop' and loss of sensation in the hand (NIH, "Radial Nerve Dysfunction"). Because the radial nerve is a complex bundle of axons rather than a discrete protein or molecule, it is classified as an anatomical structure rather than a traditional therapeutic molecular target.
