Radiographic opacity refers to the property of a material or tissue to absorb or scatter X-ray photons, thereby preventing them from reaching the detector during radiographic imaging. This physical effect is determined by the composition and thickness of tissues or materials exposed to X-rays. Radiopaque areas appear white on radiographs because they block/absorb most X-ray photons, while radiolucent areas appear black because they allow most photons to pass through. It allows clinicians to distinguish between different types of tissues and foreign bodies based on their appearance on medical images. Changes in expected patterns can indicate pathology.
