Overview

Radiographic progression refers to the measurable increase in anatomical damage—such as bone erosions or joint space narrowing—visible on X-ray images over time. In rheumatoid arthritis, it provides an objective assessment of disease severity and long-term outcomes by quantifying cumulative structural changes in affected joints. The rate and extent of this progression are influenced by factors such as persistent inflammation, high disease activity scores, RF positivity, and inadequate suppression with therapy. In oncology trials, similar concepts like "radiographic progression-free survival" are used as endpoints to evaluate how well treatments prevent tumor growth detectable via imaging modalities[1][5]. Radiographic assessment has become a standard outcome parameter for evaluating new therapies' effectiveness at slowing structural deterioration but does not represent a druggable biological entity itself[2][3][4].
