A radiopaque contrast agent is a substance administered to a patient's body to enhance the visibility of internal anatomical structures during X-ray-based imaging techniques such as radiography, computed tomography (CT), and fluoroscopy. These agents typically contain high atomic number elements—most commonly iodine or, for gastrointestinal imaging, barium sulfate—which absorb X-rays and cause the radiographed area to appear white or opaque. Their primary role is to provide diagnostic contrast by physically blocking or attenuating the passage of X-rays, thereby allowing clinicians to distinguish between different tissues and detect abnormalities. Radiopaque contrast agents do not interact with biological systems as traditional drugs or molecular targets do, and their action is strictly physical. Use of these agents carries risks, including allergic reactions and possible kidney damage, particularly in susceptible individuals. "Radiopaque contrast" is not a molecular or therapeutic target but rather a descriptive term for this broad class of X-ray contrast enhancers.
