A positron-emission tomography (PET) imaging agent is a molecule labeled with a positron-emitting radionuclide used to visualize and quantify biological processes in vivo. These agents target specific biological molecules, receptors, enzymes, or cellular transporters. Upon positron emission and annihilation, gamma photons are detected by a PET scanner to create three-dimensional images reflecting the tracer's distribution.
