Overview

RAI1 antisense RNA 1 (RAI1-AS1) is a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) classified as a natural antisense transcript (NAT), transcribed from the antisense strand of the RAI1 gene locus. As an antisense RNA, RAI1-AS1 is presumed to regulate the expression of the sense RAI1 gene through mechanisms common to NATs: hybridization to sense mRNA, interfering with gene transcription, modulating local chromatin structure, or affecting RNA stability and translation[2]. Such antisense RNAs play roles in both positive and negative regulation of gene expression, participate in epigenetic modifications, and are increasingly recognized for their involvement in cancer biology via modulation of tumor suppressor or oncogene expression[2]. However, RAI1-AS1 is not a protein-coding gene, nor is it a canonical therapeutic target like a receptor, enzyme, or transporter. There are no known drugs that directly target RAI1-AS1, and its specific biological or disease relevance is not well-defined beyond general NAT roles. Its function is inferred from the broad character of antisense lncRNAs in gene regulation[2].
