RAN binding protein pseudogene

Molecular classification
Other (Pseudogene)
01

Overview

RAN binding protein pseudogene (ENSG00000256975) is a genomic DNA sequence homologous to the RAN binding protein 1 gene, but due to disabling mutations, insertions, deletions, or lack of regulatory elements, it does not code for a functional protein. Pseudogenes may occasionally have regulatory RNA functions, such as impacting their parent gene expression through decoy, antisense, or microRNA-related mechanisms, but most pseudogenes are transcriptionally inactive and functionally silent in the genome. This entry should not be confused with RANBP1 (RAN binding protein 1), which is a functional protein involved in nucleocytoplasmic transport and has experimentally validated roles in cell biology. The pseudogene itself is not an established actionable target, biomarker, enzyme, transporter, or receptor.

Other names
No widely recognized aliases for this specific pseudogene; it is derived from the RAN binding protein 1 gene (RANBP1, also known as HTF9A, RANG). Ensembl and GENCODE may refer to it by its locus or Ensembl identifier.
02

Biological functions

Some pseudogenes can modulate gene expression (e.g., act as miRNA decoys, produce regulatory noncoding RNAs, or transcribed RNA species that regulate their parent gene), but most are nonfunctional.
03

Disease associations

Other (Pseudogenes are sometimes associated with disease regulation as decoys or regulators, but no evidence links this specific pseudogene to a disease role)
04

Safety considerations

None. As a noncoding, non-druggable sequence, there are no direct safety concerns.
