RAN pseudogene 5 is a processed pseudogene similar in sequence to the RAN (Ras-related nuclear protein) gene but lacks coding potential due to mutations or truncations acquired during evolution. Pseudogenes such as RANP5 generally do not produce functional proteins. However, some pseudogene transcripts can be expressed and act as regulatory non-coding RNAs, potentially impacting the expression of their parent gene or modulating cellular processes through mechanisms such as acting as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) or sponges for microRNAs[2][5][6]. While as a class, a minority of pseudogenes have been found to generate peptides or have biological regulatory functions, the vast majority—including RANP5—are not known to encode biologically active proteins or have evidence for direct roles as drug targets[3][1][5]. No known disease associations, biomarkers, or interacting drugs are documented for RAN pseudogene 5.
