Ranibizumab is a recombinant, humanized monoclonal antibody fragment (Fab) designed to bind with high specificity and affinity to all isoforms of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A), thereby inhibiting the interaction of VEGF-A with its receptors (VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2) on the surface of endothelial cells[1][4][5]. As an anti-angiogenic agent, it prevents neovascularization and vascular leakage in the eye, and is indicated for ocular diseases mediated by abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage, such as neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion, and myopic choroidal neovascularization[1][2][5][7]. The drug is administered via intravitreal injection. Safety concerns include risk of intraocular infection (endophthalmitis), increased intraocular pressure, and rare systemic vascular events[3][6].
