Rat Lens Aldose Reductase (RLAR)

Target
RLAR
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Alditol:NADP+ oxidoreductase
01

Overview

Rat lens aldose reductase (RLAR) is an enzyme that catalyzes the reduction of glucose to sorbitol, a key step in the polyol pathway. It is implicated in the development of diabetic complications, particularly cataracts, due to the accumulation of sorbitol in the lens. RLAR also participates in detoxification of aldehydes and antioxidant defense. It is a target for aldose reductase inhibitors, which aim to prevent or delay these complications.
