Overview

RCAN3 antisense RNA (RCAN3AS) is a long non-coding RNA that is transcribed antisense to the RCAN3 (Regulator of calcineurin 3) gene[4]. As an antisense transcript, RCAN3AS belongs to a class of RNA molecules that are complementary to protein-coding messenger RNAs with which they can hybridize, thereby modulating the expression of sense transcripts such as RCAN3 through mechanisms that include transcriptional interference, modulation of chromatin structure, or direct repression of translation[1][3][5]. RCAN3AS does not encode a protein itself and is not considered a direct therapeutic target (such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter)[4]. Its aliases include TCONS_00001428 and NCMAP-DT. Although research has broadly linked antisense RNAs to roles in gene regulation, development, epigenetic processes, and potentially disease, there is currently no evidence that RCAN3AS is used as a biomarker, drug target, or has a well-established role in specific pathological processes. RCAN3AS is not a typical drug target, but a non-coding regulatory RNA. Its main function is the regulation of the expression of the sense RCAN3 gene, which encodes a protein involved in calcineurin signaling and immune processes[1][4]. Antisense RNAs in general are emerging as important layers of gene expression regulation, with possible but as yet largely unvalidated roles in disease.
