Overview

Re-epithelialisation is a complex physiological process essential for wound healing and the restoration of the skin's barrier function (StatPearls, 2023). It involves the coordinated migration, proliferation, and differentiation of keratinocytes from the wound edges and skin appendages such as hair follicles. This process is highly regulated by various growth factors (e.g., EGF, TGF-alpha, FGF), cytokines, and interactions with the extracellular matrix (PubMed: 23613615). In clinical practice, re-epithelialisation is the primary endpoint for assessing the efficacy of wound care treatments and regenerative therapies. While not a single molecular target like a specific receptor, it is a biological phenomenon that is therapeutically modulated to treat chronic wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcers and pressure sores, where the process is often impaired (NIH/NCBI). Accelerated re-epithelialisation is critical for preventing infection, reducing fluid loss, and minimizing scar formation.
