Astrocyte activation refers to a process in which astrocytes, a type of glial cell in the central nervous system (CNS), undergo changes in morphology, gene expression, and function in response to various stimuli such as cytokines, chemokines, cellular ligands, soluble factors, injury, or disease. This process is also known as "reactive astrogliosis" or "astroglial activation".
