Reactive carbonyl compound (AGE carbonyl precursor) refers to a chemically heterogeneous group of small, highly reactive carbonyl-containing metabolites, particularly dicarbonyls such as glyoxal, methylglyoxal, and 3-deoxyglucosone. These compounds are generated during normal metabolism (e.g., glycolysis, lipid peroxidation) and dramatically increase in states of oxidative stress or hyperglycemia. They nonenzymatically react with amino groups on proteins, nucleic acids, and other macromolecules to form advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), a process implicated in vascular, renal, neurodegenerative, and aging-related diseases. While not classical drug targets, pharmacological and dietary interventions have focused on trapping or reducing these reactive carbonyls to prevent AGE formation and downstream tissue damage[1][3][5][7][8].
