Reactive Oxygen Species Generation Pathway in Skin Cells Under UV Exposure (UV-induced ROS Pathway)

Overview

The reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation pathway in skin cells under UV exposure refers to the cellular and molecular processes by which ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight induces the formation of ROS within skin cells. These highly reactive molecules, including superoxide anion (O2^{•−}), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and hydroxyl radicals (OH^{•}), play a central role in mediating photodamage, inflammation, DNA damage, apoptosis, and premature aging of the skin. Key enzymes involved include NADPH oxidases, mitochondrial ETC, catalase, and NOS. Downstream pathways activated include Nrf2/ARE, JNK/AP-1, and NF-kB.
