Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation via photosensitization is a process in which light-activated molecules called photosensitizers transfer energy to molecular oxygen, producing highly reactive oxygen species. This mechanism is central to photodynamic therapy (PDT), a treatment modality for cancer and other diseases that leverages the cytotoxic effects of ROS to selectively damage target cells.
Photosensitizers absorb light and transfer energy to molecular oxygen, generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as singlet oxygen, superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide, and hydroxyl radical, leading to oxidative damage and cell death.
