Reactive oxygen species (ROS) induction refers to the process by which cells or organisms increase the production of ROS—highly reactive molecules derived from oxygen, such as superoxide anion (\(O_2^-\)), hydrogen peroxide (\(H_2O_2\)), hydroxyl radical (\(\cdot OH\)), and singlet oxygen (\(^1O_2\))—in response to various stimuli. These species are generated as natural byproducts of cellular metabolism, particularly in the mitochondrial respiratory chain, but can also be produced enzymatically or through exposure to external factors like radiation, toxins, or pathogens. At low concentrations, ROS act as signaling molecules. Excessive induction leads to oxidative stress and damage to DNA, proteins, and lipids. This can trigger various forms of regulated cell death. Many anticancer therapies exploit cancer cells' higher baseline levels of ROS by further inducing oxidative stress beyond their tolerance threshold.
