Mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) production refers to the generation of highly reactive molecules derived from oxygen within mitochondria, primarily as a byproduct of cellular respiration and oxidative phosphorylation. The main ROS produced in mitochondria are superoxide (\(O_2^{•-}\)), hydrogen peroxide (\(H_2O_2\)), and hydroxyl radicals (\(OH^{•}\)). While traditionally considered harmful metabolic byproducts causing oxidative damage, mitochondrial ROS also serve essential signaling roles in processes such as metabolic adaptation, inflammation regulation, and stress responses. Primary sites of ROS production include ETC complexes I and III, mGPDH and ETF-QOR. Excessive mtROS cause oxidative damage to DNA, proteins, lipids—contributing to aging and various diseases.
