Reactive oxygen species (ROS)-related targets represent a broad class of proteins and enzymes involved in the generation, regulation, and neutralization of highly reactive oxygen-containing molecules such as superoxide anions and hydrogen peroxide. This category includes ROS-producing enzymes like the NADPH oxidase (NOX) family and xanthine oxidase, as well as antioxidant defense systems such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and glutathione peroxidase. These targets play a dual role in biology: at low levels, ROS act as essential signaling molecules for cell growth and immune defense, but at high levels, they cause oxidative stress leading to damage of DNA, proteins, and lipids. In disease states, chronic overproduction of ROS is a hallmark of cancer, neurodegeneration, and cardiovascular disorders, making these pathways significant areas for therapeutic intervention. Pharmacological strategies include the use of NOX inhibitors to reduce ROS production, Nrf2 activators to enhance endogenous antioxidant defenses, and direct ROS scavengers to mitigate oxidative damage.
