Overview

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) release from neutrophils is a critical component of the innate immune response. Neutrophils generate and release ROS primarily through the activation of the NADPH oxidase complex (NOX2). This process, often referred to as the "respiratory burst," results in a rapid increase in oxygen consumption and production of superoxide anion, which serves as a precursor for other ROS. While essential for antimicrobial defense, dysregulated ROS release contributes to tissue injury in various diseases. Targeting this pathway therapeutically involves modulating ROS production to balance host defense and minimize tissue damage.
