Reactive Oxygen Species Stimulant

Molecular classification
Chemical agent, Environmental factor, Biological mediator, Pro-oxidant
01

Overview

A reactive oxygen species (ROS) stimulant is any agent—chemical, biological, or physical—that increases the production of reactive oxygen species within cells. ROS are highly reactive molecules containing oxygen with unpaired electrons. At physiological levels, ROS act as signaling molecules, but excessive stimulation leads to oxidative stress, resulting in damage to cellular components and contributing to various diseases. Examples include UV radiation, certain drugs/toxins, and cytokines during inflammation. They work by enhancing mitochondrial electron leakage, activating NADPH oxidases, or promoting inflammation.
