Reagent

A reagent is a generic scientific term for any substance or compound added to a system to initiate a chemical reaction or to test for the presence and concentration of a specific analyte. In the fields of biochemistry and drug discovery, reagents include a wide variety of tools such as antibodies, enzymes, buffers, and indicators used in diagnostic assays and laboratory experiments to visualize or quantify biological materials [1, 5]. Unlike therapeutic targets such as receptors, transporters, or enzymes, a reagent is not a biological entity within the human body that drugs are designed to interact with to modulate a disease state [11]. Instead, reagents facilitate the study of these targets and the monitoring of drug efficacy and safety during the development process [8, 13]. Because the term describes a functional category of laboratory materials rather than a distinct molecular target associated with human physiology, it is considered an incorrect or non-specific entry for a therapeutic target database [2, 15].
