Rebellious Qi

Rebellious Qi, known as 'Ni Qi' in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), refers to a pathological condition where the vital energy or 'Qi' of an organ flows in a direction contrary to its normal physiological path. For example, the natural direction of Lung and Stomach Qi is downward; when this Qi 'rebels' and moves upward, it results in clinical symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, vomiting, or belching (StatPearls, TCM Concepts). This term is a diagnostic concept used in East Asian medicine to categorize patterns of disharmony and is not a specific molecule, receptor, or enzyme recognized in Western molecular biology. Treatment strategies focus on 'descending' the Qi using specific acupuncture points or herbal formulations like Su Zi Jiang Qi Tang to restore systemic balance (NIH, NCCIH).
