Receptor-Binding Domain of the Spike Glycoprotein (RBD)

Target
RBD
Molecular classification
Viral protein, Glycoprotein, Receptor-binding domain
01

Overview

The receptor-binding domain (RBD) is a critical region within the spike (S) glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2, responsible for mediating the virus's attachment to host cells. It binds to the ACE2 receptor on human cells, initiating viral entry. The RBD is also a major target for neutralizing antibodies and vaccines. The spike glycoprotein—including its RBD—is heavily glycosylated playing roles in proper folding, immune evasion (“glycan shield”), antibody recognition, and modulating conformational dynamics important for receptor engagement.
