Receptor for Advanced Glycation Endproducts (RAGE) is a transmembrane pattern recognition receptor belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. It binds to various ligands, including AGEs, S100 proteins, HMGB1, and amyloid β, triggering pro-inflammatory signaling pathways and contributing to the pathogenesis of various diseases, including diabetes complications, cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disorders, and cancer. Soluble forms of RAGE (sRAGE or esRAGE) can act as decoy receptors and serve as biomarkers for chronic inflammation.
Extracellular/intracellular targeting strategies against RAGE are under investigation therapeutically.
