01

Overview

Red blood cell (RBC) adhesion molecules are a group of cell surface proteins that mediate the attachment of RBCs to other cells, extracellular matrix components, or the vascular endothelium. These molecules, including BCAM/Lu, ICAM-4, and CD36, play a critical role in the pathophysiology of diseases such as sickle cell disease and malaria, where abnormal RBC adhesion contributes to vaso-occlusion and endothelial damage. Targeting these adhesion molecules represents a potential therapeutic strategy for preventing vascular complications in these diseases.
