Red blood cell aggregation refers to the reversible clumping or stacking of red blood cells (RBCs) under conditions of low shear force or stasis. This phenomenon is a normal physiological process but can be altered in various disease states. It is primarily mediated by fibrinogen and other high-molecular-weight plasma proteins and affects blood viscosity at low shear rates, making it a key determinant in microcirculatory flow dynamics.
