Overview

The red blood cell compartment refers to the population of circulating erythrocytes within a vascular system or ex vivo organ perfusion setup. It is critical for evaluating tissue oxygenation, microvascular flow, and overall organ viability. Assessment methods include measurement of functional capillary density, RBC deformability, hemodynamic parameters, and detailed characterization at the single-cell level. RBCs can also be engineered as drug delivery carriers or labeled with imaging agents.
