Target intelligence / Profile preview
The red blood cell (RBC) membrane is a specialized trilaminar structure consisting of a lipid bilayer, integral membrane proteins, and a supporting protein cytoskeleton. The lipid bilayer is composed of nearly equal weights of phospholipids and cholesterol, which are essential for maintaining membrane fluidity and permeability (Mohandas & Gallagher, 2008). Associated structures, such as the spectrin-actin network, provide the erythrocyte with the high degree of deformability required to navigate the microvasculature (Lux, 2016). This membrane complex is critical for physiological processes including gas exchange, ion transport, and the maintenance of cell volume. Dysfunctions in these membrane components are central to the pathogenesis of various hemolytic anemias, such as hereditary spherocytosis and sickle cell disease, as well as the invasion process of malaria parasites (StatPearls, 2023). Therapeutic strategies targeting the RBC membrane include the use of rheological agents to improve blood flow and antioxidants to prevent lipid peroxidation (PubChem, 2024).
Membrane stabilization, lipid peroxidation inhibition, pore formation, and modulation of membrane fluidity.
