Red blood cell (RBC) metabolism enzymes are a group of proteins that catalyze the biochemical reactions necessary for energy production, redox balance, and overall cellular function in erythrocytes. Unlike most other cells, mature RBCs lack mitochondria and nuclei, so they rely exclusively on cytoplasmic metabolic pathways to generate ATP and maintain homeostasis. These enzymes are involved in glycolysis, the Rapoport-Luebering shunt, and the pentose phosphate pathway. Deficiencies or mutations in these enzymes can lead to hemolytic anemia and impact systemic health.
