Overview
The red blood cell pool refers to the total population of red blood cells (erythrocytes) circulating within an organism's blood volume at any given time. These cells are responsible for oxygen transport from the lungs to tissues and carbon dioxide transport back to the lungs. The size and health of this pool are critical for maintaining adequate tissue oxygenation and are regulated by erythropoietin. Deviations from normal pool size, as reflected in RBC count and hematocrit, can indicate various pathological conditions.
