Red blood cell replacement via exogenous administration refers to the process of restoring or augmenting a patient’s RBC population by introducing RBCs or their functional equivalents from external sources. This is primarily achieved through transfusion of packed red blood cells, but can also involve alternative strategies such as administration of agents that stimulate endogenous erythropoiesis (e.g., recombinant human erythropoietin), or experimental approaches like engineered RBCs and hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers. The primary function is to restore adequate tissue oxygenation and prevent complications associated with hypoxia.
