Redox processes encompass a vast array of chemical reactions involving the transfer of electrons between molecular species, which are fundamental to energy production and cellular metabolism (Wikipedia, 2023). In biological systems, these processes occur in the mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, and cytoplasm, facilitating essential functions such as oxidative phosphorylation and the regulation of signal transduction pathways (NCBI, 2021). Redox homeostasis is maintained through a delicate balance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the activity of antioxidant defense systems, including enzymes like superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase (StatPearls, 2023). When this balance is disrupted, oxidative stress occurs, leading to cumulative damage to DNA, proteins, and lipids, which is a significant driver of chronic conditions such as cancer, neurodegeneration, and cardiovascular disease (PubMed, 2022). While 'Redox processes' is a general biological category rather than a specific molecular target, many therapeutic strategies involve modulating particular components of these processes, such as targeting the Nrf2 transcription factor to enhance antioxidant response or inhibiting specific enzymes like NADPH oxidases (Nature Reviews Drug Discovery, 2020).
