Redox System

The 'Redox System' is not a single discrete therapeutic target but rather a complex, interconnected network of biological processes and molecules essential for cellular homeostasis. It comprises various enzymatic components (e.g., SOD, CAT, GPx, TrxR, Prxd), small molecule antioxidants (e.g., GSH, Trx, vitamin E, CoQ10), regulatory proteins (e.g., Nrf2, NFκB), and redox couples (e.g., NAD+/NADH, NADP+/NADPH, GSH/GSSG ratios). This system plays critical roles in signal transduction, energy production, cell proliferation, differentiation, and cell death regulation. Dysregulation of the redox system is implicated in numerous diseases, including cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, cardiovascular disease, and aging. However, 'Redox System' is too broad to be considered a single target. Instead, therapeutic targeting should focus on specific components such as individual enzymes (e.g., Superoxide dismutase, Thioredoxin reductase, Glutathione peroxidase), regulatory proteins (e.g., Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 [Nrf2]), or signaling molecules (e.g., Reactive oxygen species, which are typically modulated rather than directly targeted).

As the 'Redox System' is a complex network rather than a single target, there is no unified mechanism of action for drugs targeting it as a whole. Therapeutic interventions typically focus on modulating specific components or pathways within the system.
