Target intelligence / Profile preview
The reduced folate carrier (RFC), encoded by the SLC19A1 gene, is a ubiquitously expressed membrane transporter and the principal system for importing reduced folates into mammalian cells. Folates are essential nutrients required for one-carbon transfer reactions, which are critical in nucleic acid synthesis and amino acid metabolism during cell division. Mammals cannot synthesize folates de novo and thus depend on RFC-mediated uptake from extracellular sources.
