"Reducing swelling" is not a specific molecular target, but rather a therapeutic outcome or physiological process involving the resolution of edema and inflammation in tissues. Swelling, or edema, is characterized by the accumulation of excess fluid in the interstitial space, often resulting from increased vascular permeability or impaired lymphatic drainage during an inflammatory response (StatPearls, "Edema", 2023). Because "reducing swelling" is a clinical indication rather than a protein or gene, it encompasses a wide range of pharmacological classes and molecular pathways aimed at restoring fluid balance and tissue homeostasis.
Reducing swelling is a clinical outcome achieved through various mechanisms, including the inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes to reduce prostaglandin synthesis, the activation of glucocorticoid receptors to suppress inflammatory cytokines, or the promotion of diuresis to remove excess systemic fluid.
