Reduction of neuroinflammatory mediators is a therapeutic strategy aimed at decreasing the levels or activity of molecules that drive inflammation within the central nervous system (CNS). These mediators include cytokines, chemokines, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and other signaling molecules produced primarily by glial cells (microglia and astrocytes) in response to injury, infection, or neurodegenerative processes. Approaches include the use of Specialized Pro-resolving Mediators (SPMs), genetic modulation, and pharmacological inhibition of key inflammatory pathways.
