Overview

Regenerating islet-derived protein 1 beta (REG1B) is a secreted protein of the Reg gene family, predominantly expressed in the exocrine pancreas but also upregulated during injury or inflammation in other epithelial tissues, including the gut. REG1B is implicated in islet cell regeneration, mucosal/epithelial repair, and acts as a survival and growth factor for pancreatic beta cells. It is of significant clinical interest as a biomarker for diabetes (type 1 and 2), predicting disease progression, and as a prognostic marker in pancreatic cancer and sepsis. Additionally, REG1B participates in the regulation of local inflammation, modulates cytokine production, and prevents cell death after epithelial injury. REG1B is not known to be the direct target of any approved therapeutic agents, but its levels are being explored for guiding prognosis and disease monitoring in several metabolic, inflammatory, and malignant diseases[1][2][3][4][5][7][8][9].
