In drug discovery, while many agents are designed to enhance regenerative activity, the term itself identifies a broad phenotypic effect or clinical endpoint rather than a discrete entity that can be bound by a ligand [Journal of Clinical Investigation, 2017]. Therefore, it is considered an incorrect designation for a specific therapeutic target molecule in structured pharmacological databases [Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, 2021]. Researchers typically focus on defined molecular components of the regenerative niche, such as specific growth factors or stem cell markers, to achieve therapeutic effects in diseases ranging from myocardial infarction to chronic skin ulcers [Cell Stem Cell, 2020].
