Regional tissue perfusion is the flow of blood through the capillary bed of a specific tissue or organ region, critical for delivering oxygen and nutrients while removing waste products. It is quantified as the rate of blood flow per tissue mass, usually measured in ml/min/g, and is essential for tissue health and cellular respiration. Malperfusion—including hypoperfusion and hyperperfusion—can cause pathological conditions such as ischemia, tissue injury, and organ failure. Regional tissue perfusion is assessed clinically with parameters like capillary refill time, tissue oxygen saturation, and lactate levels, and is monitored in scenarios such as major surgery, trauma, or shock. Alterations in microcirculatory function, including endothelial dysfunction and glycocalyx damage, play key roles in disease pathogenesis related to regional perfusion.
