Overview

Regulator of DNA class I crossover intermediates 1 (REDIC1) is a protein essential for meiotic crossover formation in mammals. It acts during meiosis to stabilize recombination intermediates, particularly by binding branched DNA structures such as D-loops and Holliday junctions. Loss-of-function mutations in REDIC1 cause dramatic defects in meiotic progression, loss of class I crossovers, and infertility due to meiotic arrest. The gene is most highly expressed in germ cells (testis, fetal ovary) and is conserved among mammals. While not a therapeutic target or classical receptor/enzyme, REDIC1 plays a crucial, specific role in germline recombination and fertility regulation
