Overview

Regulator of G protein signaling 9 binding protein (RGS9BP, also called R9AP) is a membrane-anchoring protein expressed in the retina, primarily localized to the outer segments of rod photoreceptors. It forms a complex with RGS9 (regulator of G protein signaling 9) and acts as a membrane anchor, essential for targeting RGS9 to photoreceptor membranes, where it enables rapid termination of the visual signal during phototransduction. Mutations in RGS9BP lead to an inherited retinal disorder characterized by slow recovery of vision after exposure to light (bradyopsia), due to impaired deactivation of phototransduction. RGS9BP is not a drug target or receptor, but a structural regulator required for normal visual adaptation.
