Regurgitation

01

Overview

Regurgitation is a clinical term for the backward flow of fluid, most often describing either: Cardiac regurgitation, where a heart valve (mitral, aortic, tricuspid, or pulmonary) fails to close properly, resulting in blood leaking backward and potentially causing heart failure over time; or Gastrointestinal regurgitation, which is the movement of stomach contents up the esophagus and sometimes into the mouth, classically seen in gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and can also happen physiologically in infants. Regurgitation is a sign or process, not a discrete molecular entity or therapeutic target. "Regurgitation" should not be used as a molecular target entry; for pharmacological or biological target annotation, the specific valve protein or receptor (e.g., "Mitral valve," "Aortic valve," or the physiological regulators of sphincters) should be referenced, not the generic process of regurgitation.
