Overview

Renal cell carcinoma tumor-associated peptides (RCC TUMAPs) are short amino acid sequences derived from proteins that are overexpressed or specifically expressed in renal cell carcinoma cells. These peptides are processed by the cellular machinery and presented on the cell surface by Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) class I and class II molecules [1]. This presentation is crucial for the immune system to distinguish malignant cells from healthy ones, as CD8+ cytotoxic T cells and CD4+ helper T cells recognize these peptide-HLA complexes to initiate an immune response [2]. The selection of these peptides often involves ligandomics, a process of identifying naturally presented peptides directly from patient tumor samples to ensure high relevance and reduced off-target effects [3]. While promising, the efficacy of targeting these peptides is often restricted to patients with specific HLA types, such as HLA-A*02, and requires strategies to overcome the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment [1].
