Renal proximal tubular cells (or proximal tubule epithelial cells) refer to a differentiated cell population within the kidney's filtering system. They are highly specialized epithelial cells that form the first major reabsorptive segment of the nephron. These cells are characterized by extensive mitochondrial enrichment, apical brush border microvilli, and basolateral membrane infoldings that maximize surface area for transport. They reabsorb more than 100 liters of glomerular filtrate daily, recovering 60–70% of filtered sodium, water, and chloride, as well as nearly all glucose, amino acids, and bicarbonate. These cells themselves are not a therapeutic target in the traditional sense, but they contain numerous specific molecular targets (e.g., Na+/K+-ATPase, OATs, Aquaporins, SGLT2, phosphate-sensing pathways) that are legitimate therapeutic targets for various conditions, including chronic kidney disease.
