Overview

Renal tubular electrolyte reabsorption refers to the process by which the kidneys reclaim essential electrolytes from the filtrate and return them to the bloodstream. This process is fundamental for maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance, acid-base homeostasis, and overall body homeostasis. Reabsorption occurs along different segments of the nephron (proximal tubule, loop of Henle, distal tubule, and collecting duct) involving various transporters and is regulated by hormones like aldosterone, ADH, and parathyroid hormone. Defects or dysregulation can lead to electrolyte imbalances, acid-base disturbances and tubulopathies.
