Renal Tubular Electrolyte Transporter

Molecular classification
Transporter, Ion channel, Enzyme (Na+/K+ ATPase)
01

Overview

Renal tubular electrolyte transporters are a diverse group of membrane proteins located along the renal tubules of the nephron. They are essential for maintaining fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base homeostasis by mediating the reabsorption and secretion of key ions such as sodium (Na⁺), potassium (K⁺), calcium (Ca²⁺), magnesium (Mg²⁺), phosphate, chloride (Cl⁻), and bicarbonate (HCO₃⁻). These transporters work in concert with hormonal signals—primarily aldosterone, vasopressin/antidiuretic hormone (ADH), and parathyroid hormone—to fine-tune systemic electrolyte balance. Defects or dysregulation can cause electrolyte imbalances, acid-base disorders, and hereditary tubulopathies. Many diuretics act on these transporters.
